Day 261- Brighton Beach Memoirs or "Let's go find another Beach"

Day 261- Brighton Beach Memoirs or "Let's go find another Beach"- Sunday, September 9

Another "fine" day, sunny and +20℃ day in Melbourne, perfect for a walk along the beach. Colleen and I set out for Brighton Beach, world famous for its beach change houses and for a film of the same name. During the winter, I had stumbled upon the shacks while my soccer team was playing rival Brighton Grammar School, and now that the weather was nice, we felt that a walk along the shore would be in order.
My navigational skills were a little off, and we missed the turn by a few hundred metres. This was fortuitous, since we ended up at great little spots like Rickets Point, Sandringham Beach and Black Rock. We stopped at each beach, walked and took photos and enjoyed the uniqueness of each beach. There were even a few swimmers! But mostly, we saw lots of families out for the sunshine and a chance to walk along the beautiful foreshore.
Sometimes the shore is rocky and rugged, sometimes tidal pools are flowing in and out, sometimes the sand is deep and grainy, and in other spots it was smooth and sugary.
We discovered the location of the sea kayak rental outfit that we were to have visited in the autumn, but conditions were too rough. We will be back at www.eastcoastkayaking.com in a few weeks. Want to join us?
Finally, we found Middle Brighton Beach, and we stopped to take photos of the colourful change houses. I can't imagine how busy it will be in summer, just before we leave for home!

While sipping lattés at Sandringham Beach, I said to Colleen, "Let's go find another beach!" If only one had a lifetime to do that. You could spend your whole life in this country just going from one beach to the next. I don't think it would hurt to try.

(Later in the week, I discovered that one of my school colleagues, Anthony, is related to the owner of the Australian flag painted change house in our photos. Present value of the 100 square foot shack: $150,000).

Sunday evening, we were invited to the home of one of Colleen's "walking group." The ladies are mostly parents of Wesley students, including one in my class. We were treated to wonderful food, in a beautiful home, and great conversations. What a fine group of friends Colleen has been privileged to have while here in Australia.
